A STUDENT! What else?

A STUDENT! What else? By Olympus Ade-Banjo At 13, he enrolled in the Lakeside School, a private preparatory school. When he was in the eighth grade, the Mothers' Club at the school used proceeds from Lakeside School's rummage sale to buy a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric (GE) computer for the school's students. Gates took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC, and was excused from math classes to pursue his interest. He wrote his first computer program on this machine: an implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer. Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would always execute software code perfectly. After the Mothers Club donation was exhausted, he and other students sought time on systems including DEC PDP minicomputers. One of these systems was a PDP-10 belonging to Computer Center Corporation (CCC), which banned four Lakeside students -Gates, -Paul All

HELP FOUNDATION COMMENDS THE MANAGEMENT OF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY PRESS RELEASE 20/04/18 We hereby commend the Management Of the Obafemi Awolowo University for the proactive steps they have taken since the release of one Professor Richard Akindele's sex-for-mark scandal. In the press statement released by the school management, the committee set up for the investigation of the case gave their recommendation which led to the indefinite suspension on the Professor who was found culpable in sexual harassment audio with the victim who was identified to be one Miss Monica Osagie. This is a good development, however, we demand that the lecturer faces the full length of the law. Furthermore, we believe Professor Akindele's case is just one out of thousands that never see the light of the day and destinies of lots of students get shattered on a daily basis. We hereby call on the Government and relevant regulatory bodies to adapt campus regulatory policies as in developed co

STUDENT RIGHTS ABUSE Article by: Bajela Oluwadamilare. Student Rights  are those rights, such as civil, constitutional, contractual and consumer rights, which regulate students rights and freedoms and allow students to make use of their educational investment. These include such things as the right to free speech and association, to due process, equality, autonomy, safety and privacy, among others. However, it is unthinkable that these rights which are supposed to be the priorities of teachers, lecturers, school management and government are being despised, disregarded, vilified unjustly and in other words, abused.  I see it a matter of necessity to look into this key aspect of the Nigerian Educational System as it is an important factor which undermines the  attitude-to-education  of students nationwide. Research has it that many institutions worldwide engage in Student Rights Abuse but more emphasis will be made on our dear country. Efforts have therefore b

INTRODUCING H.E.L.P STUDENTS NETWORK(HSN)

INTRODUCING H.E.L.P STUDENTS NETWORK(HSN) At H.E.L.P FOUNDATION, we've come to believe that the war against anti-student culture cannot be won in Nigeria and neither can we achieve the goal of ideal tertiary education (as it is in ideal societies) without the support and contribution the students themselves.  To this effect we created HSN as a platform for brave, revolutionary and peace-oriented students across the country with the same goal which is 'RESTORING SANITY TO OUR CAMPUS'.  It is evident that nigerian campuses have lost sanity as cases of Sexual abuse, extortion, fee hikes , physical abuse, lack of due legal process, lecture-time mismanagement, examination mismanagement, cultism, indiscriminate arrest by security agencies etc are the norms of our campus society leaving Nigeria with an annual turn-over of bastardized, dehumanized, insecure and worst, unemployable graduate. Silence has allowed this culture to thrive for so long but not anymore as HSN studen
